Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael’s) great masterpiece, the School of Athens, is his most famous and most loved painting. The School of Athens, a fresco in what is now known as the Stanza della Segnatura in the Raphael Rooms in the Vatican Palace, was executed between 1508 and 1510, a time of historic cultural transitions in Western Europe and of substantial transitions in Raphael’s artistic development. The room in which Raphael frescoed the School of Athens was intended to be the personal library of Pope Julius II, and the fresco’s subject matter was a homage to Ancient Greek philosophers, mathematicians, and scientists. Along with the other frescoes that Raphael executed on the walls of the Stanza della Segnatura, which depicted scenes representing theology, poetry, and justice, the School of Athens celebrated the rebirth of the culture and art of antiquity at the high-water mark of the Italian High Renaissance. This short monograph explores the historical, cultural, and artistic context of Raphael’s School of Athens. That context includes the evolving acceptance of Ancient Greek philosophical wisdom by the Catholic Church; Raphael’s development as an artist and his artistic influences, including those of Perugino, Leonardo, and Michelangelo; the patronship of Julius II; the composition, execution, and legacy of Raphael’s greatest and timeless masterpiece; and a brief discussion of Raphael’s post-School of Athens life, art, and death.
